According to Weekly Quality Report of CCTV, Jiangsu Quality Inspection bureau recently conducted a general survey on the plastic straws in the market, finding that safety hazards such as fluorescent substances, plasticizers, azo dyes and heavy metals are common in straws. The colorful straws we often see on the market are actually the cheapest products with the lowest safety.

According to test results, 56% plastic straws are detected to contain excessive azo dye and heavy metal and 39% contains migration of fluorescent substances. If we use those colorful straws in a long run, heavy metals will accumulate in our bodies, causing damage to neuro system and skeleton system. At the same time, cancer can be induced if fluorescent substances accumulate in human bodies.

Besides, the test shows the evaporities in straws is also a problem. The failure rate reaches as high as 19%. Evaporities refer to chemicals that separate out when straws are used for sucking juice, acid beverage, vinegar, alcohol and etc. The higher the evaporitie index is, the greater hazard it poses to human health, especially for children and teenagers during adolescence.

Experts remind consumers to choose straws that are well sealed, in independent packaging and elastic if possible, which prove to be more hygienic.

Reminder: There is high risk in tableware safety, which is under strict supervision and regulation by competent departments. So it is advisable that businesses test their products to avoid economic loss.
