On 1 December 2015, Hangzhou Inspection and Quarantine Bureau supervised the destruction of an array of imitation jewelry imported from South Korea due to dangerous level of lead and cadmium. The presence of lead reached as high as 680 times of the limit value.

According to information, the brooches imported from South Korea totaled 195 worth USD 189.15. Hangzhou Inspection and Quarantine Bureau found that the presence of lead and cadmium were 68% and 0,88% respectively, exceeding the corresponding limit values 0,1% and 0,01% during product testing.
Competent personnel sealed the unqualified products immediately and notified the treatment result to the receiver. On December 1, the authority supervised the destruction of those products on the spot upon consent from receiver. Lead is known as one of toxic and accumulative heavy metals, which may do harm to the nerves, hemopoietic system and digestive system in the long run. However, dangerous level of arsenic may lead to decoration and dermal injuries to the human body, leading to adverse effects of central nervous system after accumulation. Skin is the major way for lead and arsenic to enter human bodies. So it is for certain that consumers will get injured with such unqualified pendants. Furthermore, wastes of such products with dangerous levels of heavy metals will harm the environment.

C&K Testing advises importers to choose authoritative testing bodies for product testing to avoid loss caused by destruction or return.
