TFDA bans cosmetics containing ainthistamine

Taiwan’s Food and Drug Administration (TFDA), Ministry of Health and Welfare has published B.S.S. Notification No. 1051604972 to formulate that “the use of antihistamine is prohibited in cosmetics” on 30 June 2016 in accordance with Administrative Regulation on Cosmetics Hygiene. The ban on entry and manufacture of antihistamine-containing cosmetics is effective immediately, while the ban on such cosmetics for sale or intended for sale, supply or displayed for supply is effective on 1 January 2017.
 
The matters covered in the Notification:
1. The ban on entry and manufacture of antihistamine-containing cosmetics is effective since the date of notification.
2. The ban on such cosmetics for sale or intended for sale, supply or displayed for supply is effective on 1 January 2017.
3. License holders for cosmeceuticals which contain antihistamine shall immediately go over procedures for ingredient change registration for licenses or for licenses cancellation. If they fail to do so before 1 January 2017, the licenses shall be repealed by the Ministry according to laws.
4. The former Ministry of Health published W.S.Y.Z. Notification No. 539747 on deletion of entry 1 “aminoether antihistamine” in Cosmeceuticals Standard on 23 July 1985.
 
Antihistamine in cosmetics can effectively inhibit allergic reactions (such as erythema, edema and pruritus). It is commonly found in sunscreen and antipruritic products.
