US NGO advocates stricter enforcement on phthalates in toys

Recently, a US non-governmental organisation-- The Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) called for vigorous enforcement on consumer safety and phthalate bans on toys.
 
RIRG published the 30th annual Trouble in Toyland report, which indicated some toys with high levels of toxic substances were on sale for toy stores. The toxic substances include phthalates and chromium.
 
RIRG urges Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to enforce Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) more vigorous, such as lead limit, bans on DEHP, DBP and BBP.
 
In addition, PIRG calls for the CPSC to make permanent the interim bans on DINP, DIDP and DnOP. Besides, it also wants the similar bans on DIBP, DPENP, DHEXP and DCHP. The aforesaid is consistent with the phthalate ban on children’s products proposed by CPSC in last December.
 
Though CPSC didn’t adopt the proposal, it is predictable that US will strengthen its enforcement on phthalates in toys and childcare articles. C&K Testing advises toy exporters should strengthen quality control and product testing to reduce trade risks.
