California Assembly has approved a bill (AB 127) thatwould revise California building code tests to support the flame retardant-free insulation. The new standards would have to maintain overall building fire safety “while giving full consideration to the long-term human and ecological health effects associated with chemical flame retardants”

The legislation calls for the State Fire Marshal, in consultation with the Bureau of Electronic and Appliance Repair, Home Furnishings and Thermal Insulation, to propose the updated flammability standards to the California Building Standards Commission by 1 January 2015. To become effective, the new standards would then have to be adopted by the commission.
