Recently, the EPD reports for two products under the globally leading bamboo brand dasso®—dassoCTECH® and dassoXTR® outdoor bamboo products—were updated and republished under the International EPD System. As a pioneer in the international green and low-carbon field, dasso® is the first Chinese bamboo product manufacturer to obtain an EPD report.

The recent revision of the EU Construction Products Regulation (CPR, REGULATION (EU) 2024/3110) has profound impacts on EPDs. The revision sets new sustainability requirements for construction products circulating in the EU market. One requirement is that all construction products must provide third-party verified Global Warming Potential (GWP) values and include GWP in the EU construction product CE certification's Declaration of Performance (DoP). EPD reports meet this requirement and can also be used in BREEAM, LEED, Green Star, and other green building certification systems.

CIRS's sustainability department, with its dual-carbon technology team, served as the LCA consulting agency for this project, completing on-site surveys, data collection, LCA modeling, EPD report preparation, and cooperating with European audit experts for on-site factory evaluation, ensuring the successful publication of the product EPD reports. dasso® plans to deepen its collaboration with CIRS to further green and low-carbon initiatives, paving a fast track to the global sustainable market.

It provides services such as Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA), product carbon footprint, EPD certification, recycling certification, and green chemistry assessment and certification.

CIRS Testing is an international third-party testing agency and a wholly-owned subsidiary of CIRS, recognized as a national high-tech enterprise. It holds certifications such as China Metrology Certification (CMA), China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment (CNAS), and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), with over 10,000 square meters of laboratory space.

What is an EPD (Environmental Product Declaration)?

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a standardized, third-party verified document that provides transparent and comparable information about the environmental impact of a product throughout its lifecycle. Based on the Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology, EPDs are compiled and verified according to international standards ISO 14025 and are based on LCA results conforming to ISO 14040 and ISO 14044.

Why Create an EPD?

EPDs convey third-party certified environmental information related to a product or service from a lifecycle perspective. Globally, the EPD system is one of the most widely used third-party environmental declarations, covering almost all types of products and services. EPDs help improve ecological protection efforts through scientific decision-making and targeted communication.

EPDs can help:

  1. Improve internal environmental decision-making.
  2. Quantify environmental performance.
  3. Highlight corporate social responsibility.
  4. Enhance brand image.
  5. Overcome international trade barriers.
  6. Promote green consumption.

EPDs Support Decision-Making

The information in Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) is objective and factual. When a product is certified with an EPD, it can influence decision-makers in many areas, such as eco-design engineers, environmental managers, customers, and consumers.

Common Areas Where Decision-Makers Use Information from EPDs:

  • Internal Environmental Management to Monitor and Improve Product Environmental Performance. EPDs serve as a method to establish a baseline for corporate environmental performance, allowing for continuous improvement through monitoring.
  • Business-to-Business Communication with Relevant and Reliable Data on Environmental Performance. Any company in the supply chain can benefit from implementing EPDs. EPDs provide buyers with the expected environmental information, promoting efficient corporate management and reducing the workload in the bidding process.
  • Communicating Unique Environmental Protection Efforts from Business to Consumer. If the product is a consumer good, EPDs can be reflected in packaging and marketing materials to communicate with end users. Importantly, EPDs for consumer goods should be simple and easy to understand.
  • Verification of Environmental Compliance by Professional Buyers through EPDs. EPDs provide professional utility in many aspects. For professional buyers, EPDs indicate that, beyond functionality, quality, and design, a supplier's products meet the environmental requirements of the contracting entity. LCA and EPDs cover the entire lifecycle of products, and the environmental characteristics they reflect will drive the upstream and downstream industry chains to engage in green and low-carbon efforts, strongly guiding and supporting Chinese manufacturing products to participate actively in international market competition with a greener and low-carbon image.
