On December 15, 2025, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) Member State Committee (MSC) unanimously agreed to list n-hexane as a Substance of Very High Concern (SVHC). This is the first substance identified for its neurotoxic properties, rather than traditional categories such as carcinogenicity, mutagenicity, or reproductive toxicity.
Additionally, 4,4'-[2,2,2-trifluoro-1-(trifluoromethyl)ethylidene]diphenol (BPAF) and its salts have been added to the SVHC candidate list without committee discussion. The proposal for recognizing 4,4'-dihydroxydiphenylmethane (Bisphenol F, BPF) as an SVHC was withdrawn before the meeting, but the SVHC process is still ongoing, with its status marked as "Identification ongoing" in the registry of intentions.

ECHA will add both substances to the Candidate List of substances of very high concern in February 2026.
Information on the two SVHC candidate list substances is as follows:
Substance Name: n-Hexane
EC Number: 203-777-6
CAS Number: 110-54-3
Common Uses: Used in polishes and waxes, adhesives and sealants, antifreeze products, biocides, coating products, textile treatment products and dyes, and cosmetics and personal care products.
Substance Name: 4,4'-[2,2,2-trifluoro-1-(trifluoromethyl)ethylidene]diphenol (BPAF) and its salts
EC Number: --
CAS Number: --
Common Uses: Used as a monomer for synthesizing fluorinated polymers, and also in the synthesis of dyes, photosensitive materials, and optical brighteners.
